How to Price Canvas Art
The price-per-square-inch method is the most widely used approach for pricing original artwork. It provides a consistent, scalable framework that ensures larger pieces command appropriately higher prices while keeping smaller works accessible.
The formula is simple: Width × Height × Rate = Base Price. For example, a 16×20 inch canvas at $5 per square inch yields a base price of $1,600.
Remember that your base price should cover your time and skill — material costs (canvas, paint, brushes, varnish) are typically added on top. Many artists also add a percentage for overhead (studio rent, marketing, packaging).
