How Much Paint Do You Need?

The amount of paint needed depends on canvas size, number of layers, paint type, and application technique. Heavy-body acrylic paint covers approximately 75 square inches per fluid ounce when applied with a brush at medium thickness.

Acrylic paint is the most economical option. A standard 2oz tube can cover about 150 square inches — roughly enough for one coat on an 11×14 canvas.

Oil paint covers less area per ounce but can be thinned more. Watercolor covers the most area due to its transparent, diluted application.

Pro tip: Buying larger bottles (8oz+) typically saves 30-50% per ounce compared to individual tubes, especially for colors you use frequently like white and black.
